How to: Drive Safely on Snow & Ice

Delaware saw its first dusting of snow today. I have always loved snow and I couldn't have been more excited as I watched it fall from Penn's Place in Historic New Castle. Although the snow is pretty when covering the trees and roof tops, it creates slippery and hazardous roads. Here are 10 safety tips for driving on snow and ice covered roads from edmonds.com.

1. Get a grip. To have adequate snow traction, a tire requires at least 6/32-inch deep tread, according to The Tire Rack. (New passenger-car tires usually have 10/32-inch of tread.) Ultrahigh-performance "summer" tires have little or no grip in snow. Even "all-season" tires don't necessarily have great snow traction: Some do, some don't. If you live where the roads are regularly covered with snow, use snow tires (sometimes called "winter tires" by tiremakers). They have a "snowflake on the mountain" symbol on the sidewall, meaning they meet a tire-industry standard for snow traction.

2. Make sure you can see. Replace windshield wiper blades. Clean the inside of your windows thoroughly. Apply a water-shedding material (such as Rain-X) to the outside of all windows, including the mirrors. Make sure your windshield washer system works and is full of an anti-icing fluid. Drain older fluid by running the washers until new fluid appears: Switching fluid colors makes this easy.

3. Run the air-conditioner. In order to remove condensation and frost from the interior of windows, engage your air-conditioner and select the fresh air option: It's fine to set the temperature on "hot." Many cars automatically do this when you choose the defrost setting.

4. Check your lights. Use your headlights so that others will see you and, we hope, not pull out in front of you. Make sure your headlights and taillights are clear of snow. If you have an older car with sand-pitted headlights, get a new set of lenses. To prevent future pitting, cover the new lens with a clear tape like that used to protect the leading edge of helicopter rotor blades and racecar wings. It's available from auto-racing supply sites.

5. Give yourself a brake. Learn how to get maximum efficiency from your brakes before an emergency. It's easy to properly use antilock brakes: Stomp, stay and steer. Stomp on the pedal as if you were trying to snap it off. Stay hard on the pedal. Steer around the obstacle. (A warning: A little bit of steering goes a very long way in an emergency. See Tip 8.) If you drive on icy roads or roads that are covered with snow, modify your ABS technique: After you "Stomp" and the ABS begins cycling — you will feel pulses in the pedal or hear the system working — ease up slightly on the pedal until the pulsing happens only once a second.

6. Watch carefully for "black ice." If the road looks slick, it probably is. This is especially true with one of winter's worst hazards: "black ice." Also called "glare ice," this is nearly transparent ice that often looks like a harmless puddle or is overlooked entirely. Test the traction with a smooth brake application or slight turn of the wheel.

7. Remember the tough spots. Race drivers must memorize the nuances of every track, so they can alter their path for changing track conditions. You must remember where icy roads tend to occur. Bridges and intersections are common places. Also: wherever water runs across the road. I know people who lost control on ice caused by homeowners draining above-ground pools and by an automatic lawn sprinkler that sprayed water onto a street in freezing temperatures.

8. Too much steering is bad. If a slick section in a turn causes your front tires to lose grip, the common — but incorrect — reaction is to continue turning the steering wheel. That's like writing checks on an overdrawn account: It won't improve the situation and may make things worse. If the icy conditions end and the front tires regain grip, your car will dart whichever way the wheels are pointed. That may be into oncoming traffic or a telephone pole. Something very similar happens if you steer too much while braking with ABS. Sadly, there are situations where nothing will prevent a crash, but turning the steering too much never helps.

9. Avoid rear-tire slides. First, choose a car with electronic stability control. Fortunately, ESC will be mandatory on all 2012 models. Next, make sure your rear tires have at least as much tread as your front tires. Finally, if you buy winter tires, get four.

1o. Technology offers no miracles. All-wheel drive and electronic stability control can get you into trouble by offering a false sense of security. AWD can only help a vehicle accelerate or keep moving: It can't help you go around a snow-covered turn, much less stop at an icy intersection. ESC can prevent a spinout, but it can't clear ice from the roads or give your tires more traction. Don't let these lull you into overestimating the available traction.

Last Minute Gift Ideas

When time is running out here are some last minute gift ideas you can easily pull together.
1. Your Time: Spending quality time with an important person in your life can be more valuable then any gift. Plan a day such as lunch and a movie or visit a museum or attraction in your area.
2. Sporting Event/Concert: This gift is perfect for just about anyone on your list. Search for upcoming games or shows of their favorite sports team or band.
3. A Charitable Donation: When you’re stumped on what to give the person who has everything, donate to their local charity. This may also encourage them to give back over the holiday.

4. TV Series: Buy their favorite sitcom on DVD. You can pick them up for under $50 at Walmart or Target. You’ll have them laughing over and over with each episode.
5. Pictures: Photos always make great gifts. Find a great picture of you and the person on your list and place it in a great frame. You can guarantee that they will display it in their home.

November Birthstones

Happy Birthday to all the November babies! I'm sure most of you know your month's birthstone. Birthstones have been around since ancient times and believed to protect the owner and wearer of the stone.

November's birthstones are topaz and citrine. The two gemstones were commonly mistaken for each other, so jewelers decided upon both. The gemstones come in shades of brown, yellow, gold, and orange.

Citrine from www.colourlovers.com.

The November birthstones has an extensive list or properties:
1. Prevents colds and other diseases.
2. Strengthens breathing.
3. Controls angry passions.
4. Enhances creativity.
5. Increases understanding.
6. Brings relaxation.
7. Restores energy.
8. Helps in tissue regeneration.

Keep this in mind when purchasing topaz or citrine jewelry. The more intense the color, the more valuable to stone.

Online Holiday Shopping

The holiday season is right around the corner.
Follow these tips for a safe online shopping experience.

Keep a Record. Save or print a confirmation of your transaction.
Find a Phone Number. If you find a phone number you can be sure the company is committed to customer service.
Never Buy From Spammers.Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Verify an Item's Value.  If a manufacturer is selling something well below the market value, something is probably wrong.
Use Credit Cards. Debit cards typically have limited fraud-tracking capabilities.
Get a Temporary Credit Card Number. Many credit card companies allow customers to generate temporary credit card numbers that you can use just once or revoke at any time. Companies that offer this service include MBNA, Citibank, and Discover.
Check for Security. Don't enter any information into an online form unless you are certain that the Web site is secure.
Never Give Personal Data. You should never be asked for your SSN or other personal information.
Read the Fine Print.  Most reputable companies will post their privacy policy in an easy-to-read place on the site.
Act Responsibly. Your online and offline behavior should be generally the same.

Tips for a Safe Halloween

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Coming up with a unique costume is half the fun! Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind while celebrating this Halloween.

FDA.gov

Enjoy a safe and happy Halloween by following the “lucky 13” guidelines from FDA, Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
  1. Wear costumes made of fire-retardant materials; look for “flame resistant” on the label. If you make your costume, use flame-resistant fabrics such as polyester or nylon.
  2. Wear bright, reflective costumes or add strips of reflective tape so you’ll be more visible; make sure the costumes aren’t so long that you’re in danger of tripping.
  3. Wear makeup and hats rather than masks that can obscure your vision.
  4. Test the makeup you plan to use by putting a small amount on your arm a couple of days in advance. If you get a rash, redness, swelling, or other signs of irritation where you applied it, that’s a sign you may be allergic to it.
  5. Check FDA’s list of color additives to see if additives in your makeup are FDA approved. If they aren’t approved for their intended use, don’t use it.
  6. Don’t wear decorative contact lenses unless you have seen an eye care professional and gotten a proper lens fitting and instructions for using the lenses
  7. Don’t eat candy until it has been inspected at home.
  8. Trick-or-treaters should eat a snack before heading out, so they won’t be tempted to nibble on treats that haven’t been inspected.
  9. Tell children not to accept—or eat—anything that isn’t commercially wrapped.
  10. Parents of very young children should remove any choking hazards such as gum, peanuts, hard candies, or small toys.
  11. Inspect commercially wrapped treats for signs of tampering, such as an unusual appearance or discoloration, tiny pinholes, or tears in wrappers. Throw away anything that looks suspicious.
  12. Look for the warning label to avoid juice that hasn’t been pasteurized or otherwise processed, especially packaged juice products that may have been made on site. When in doubt, ask! Always ask it you are unsure if a juice product is pasteurized or not. Normally, the juice found in your grocer’s frozen food case, refrigerated section, or on the shelf in boxes, bottles, or cans is pasteurized.
  13. Before bobbing for apples—a favorite Halloween game—reduce the amount of bacteria that might be on apples by thoroughly rinsing them under cool running water. As an added precaution, use a produce brush to remove surface dirt.
