Tips for a Safe Halloween

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Coming up with a unique costume is half the fun! Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind while celebrating this Halloween.

FDA.gov

Enjoy a safe and happy Halloween by following the “lucky 13” guidelines from FDA, Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
  1. Wear costumes made of fire-retardant materials; look for “flame resistant” on the label. If you make your costume, use flame-resistant fabrics such as polyester or nylon.
  2. Wear bright, reflective costumes or add strips of reflective tape so you’ll be more visible; make sure the costumes aren’t so long that you’re in danger of tripping.
  3. Wear makeup and hats rather than masks that can obscure your vision.
  4. Test the makeup you plan to use by putting a small amount on your arm a couple of days in advance. If you get a rash, redness, swelling, or other signs of irritation where you applied it, that’s a sign you may be allergic to it.
  5. Check FDA’s list of color additives to see if additives in your makeup are FDA approved. If they aren’t approved for their intended use, don’t use it.
  6. Don’t wear decorative contact lenses unless you have seen an eye care professional and gotten a proper lens fitting and instructions for using the lenses
  7. Don’t eat candy until it has been inspected at home.
  8. Trick-or-treaters should eat a snack before heading out, so they won’t be tempted to nibble on treats that haven’t been inspected.
  9. Tell children not to accept—or eat—anything that isn’t commercially wrapped.
  10. Parents of very young children should remove any choking hazards such as gum, peanuts, hard candies, or small toys.
  11. Inspect commercially wrapped treats for signs of tampering, such as an unusual appearance or discoloration, tiny pinholes, or tears in wrappers. Throw away anything that looks suspicious.
  12. Look for the warning label to avoid juice that hasn’t been pasteurized or otherwise processed, especially packaged juice products that may have been made on site. When in doubt, ask! Always ask it you are unsure if a juice product is pasteurized or not. Normally, the juice found in your grocer’s frozen food case, refrigerated section, or on the shelf in boxes, bottles, or cans is pasteurized.
  13. Before bobbing for apples—a favorite Halloween game—reduce the amount of bacteria that might be on apples by thoroughly rinsing them under cool running water. As an added precaution, use a produce brush to remove surface dirt.

How to: Care for Sterling Silver Jewelry

Tips and tricks to care and maintain your sterling silver jewelry.
  • Make your jewelry the last thing you put on in the morning, and the first thing you take off at night.
  • Wear your silver frequently. Silver remains cleaner and shinier with movement and friction.
  • Remove your jewelry when cleaning, swimming, and taking a shower.
  • Place your jewelry in a zip-lock bag and store in a cool, dry place. This will slow the tarnishing and prevent scratching.

  • Wipe your jewelry clean with a soft cloth before returning it to storage to remove body oils and dirt.
  • Clean your tarnished jewelry with a professional polishing cloth such as the Sunshine Polishing Cloth.
  • Do not use a dip solution. These chemical cleaning solutions may cause your sliver and gemstones to turn in color.
  • It is recommended not to clean your silver with toothpaste and a tooth brush. This will easily scratch the silver.

Take care of your silver jewelry now and you will be able to enjoy your pieces for years to come.

Interior Design Trend Alert

Yesterday while at my much needed hair appointment I flipped through the October issue of Elle Decor. If you are looking to update your home you will not be disappointed in this magazine. It is full of inspiring ideas and designs.

There were two pages in particular that caught my eye. (I have to admit, I even snapped a picture with my phone so I could remember!) The article was about trends within the home decor industry. I was surprised to find that the trends on the runway are not much different. Here's a look at two fall trends in fashion design and interior design.

Trend Alert #1: Velvet

Add velvet to your home for an instant touch of elegance.
Selection of fabrics from elledecor.com.

Velvet was found all over the NY runways. Designers were adding the fabric to blazers, dresses, and Alexa Chung even included velvet in her shorts for Madewell.

Trend Alert #2: Animal Prints

Exotic patterns are hitting homes. Animal prints can be incorporated into a room with an area rug, hand towels, or a charger like Ralph Lauren's.

In my opinion, animal prints are always in style. You will be sure to turn heads with a leopard print dress and a little bit of confidence!

Commit to Good Health

It's no secret that October has been designated as Nation Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You can find pink ribbons just about everywhere, but it is the purpose behind the ribbon that is so important.

The main focus of both the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition and the Susan B. Komen for the Cure is to educate. Education is the first step to early prevention and treatment of breast cancer. So, wear you pink this October and commit to good health today!

Rose Quartz, Tourmaline, & Rainbow Soocho Jade Necklace

Four steps every women should follow for better breast health:
1. Know your risk. Learn your family’s health history and talk with your doctor about your personal risk of breast cancer.
2. Get Screened. Beginning at the age of 20,  have a clinical breast exam every 3 years. At the age of 40, have a mammogram and clinical breast exam each year. Be sure to check with your doctor for the appropriate screening tests for you.
3. Know what is normal for you. Learn what is normal to you through regular self-breast exams. Be aware of the changes in your breasts and consult your doctor immediately if you have any concerns.
4. Make healthy lifestyle choices. Maintain a healthy weight and add exercise to your routine. It is also important to limit alcohol consumption.
For additional information on risk factors, breast concerns, or mammograms visit the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) www.debreastcancer.org or Susan G. Komen for the Cure www.komen.org

Don't forget! Kerry Elizabeth is donating 25% of any piece in our "Pink Collection" to the DBCC. See our earlier post Wear Pink & Give Hope.

Tying the Knot?

Gazing out into the Delaware Bay...

I spend this past Sunday watching the wild waves and blowing trees at the Cape May Lewes Ferry terminal. Despite the rainy weather, brides-to-be came to the Tie the Knot Wedding Expo.

The brides had their pick from some of the most noteworthy businesses. The charming and beautiful ladies from Vivain's Style, a salon and spa in Lewes, DE, was offering a drawing for a free updo. The talented photographer Eric Crossen was not only giving me pointers on shooting jewelry but also offering his services to the brides-to-be. Throughout the day, we were serenaded by The Honeycombs, a popular Delaware band.

Nettled among these fabulous vendors was my Bridal Collection. I was excited to be part of such a great event. Bridal and bridesmaid jewelry are my favorite pieces to create. It is always flattering to be part of a bride's special day!

The Winner Is....

Congratulations Deb!
You have won a Kerry Elizabeth!

Late last night I tossed all the entries into a box. With the help of a friend, a winner was picked. Deb from Delaware City, was the lucky one chosen!

The jewelry pictured is made entirely of amethyst and sterling silver. The large gemstones throughout the necklace are faceted in such a way that the amethyst glistens as it catches the light. Spacing apart each stone is dogtooth amethyst and sterling silver balls. The design is simple, but the large gemstones will make a great statement piece!

The matching earrings are also included in the giveaway. Dogtooth amethyst is dangling from a sterling silver braided ring. These earrings would look great with the necklace or on their own.

Thank you to everyone who entered and keep your eye out for the next giveaway!
